What To Expect At Your Boston In-Home Shutter Consultation

March 26, 2019

As you begin the window treatment buying process, some companies, like Sunburst, send out a rep for an in-home consultation. By bringing samples to you, we can show you how various window coverings would work in your room. Now you can make an informed selection by seeing how each window treatment looks in your own room.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how does meeting a representative in your home allow you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Sunburst is a leader in these in-home consultations, and here’s what you should expect at your appointment.

Detailing A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Begin by making an appointment by contacting your local representative. If you already have a shutter or window treatment in mind, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make it a point to show you different options for your preferred choice. We will also show additional treatments, so you can be sure that your choice matches your ideal.

After we come to your house, we’ll sit down and figure out what you need in a window treatment. We’ll cover issues like your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency ideas, and we’ll discuss hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your representative will also ask about how your windows are used and what style you are looking to accomplish. The primary objective is to fully envision what your windows will ultimately look like with the coverings installed.

You may have to see many different window treatments and compare each window treatment against each other. Most people need to explore a few different ideas, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or choosing the best stain to coordinate with the walls. We’ll also find all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll take precise measurements of your windows. We will typically measure the windows throughout the house—even if you only plan to fit treatments for a portion of the house. We do this because many of our clients ask to get future window treatments quickly. Before we leave, we will guide you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no surprises on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are confident that Sunburst will give you compentent in-home consultation, there are some things you should never witness from any window treatment rep. It should go without saying, the quality of your consultation experience reflects the quality of the window treatments.

First, your rep should respect your home. The rep should arrive on time, with all samples requested, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your representative should always bring product and company pamphlets and pricing information.

When discussing pricing, you should be given a detailed written quote. Don’t accept a large pricing range, scribbled on a product brochure or the back of a business card. And always reject a quote without window measurement. You should always understand how much you should pay and why. Don’t forget to ask for references and online reviews.
