Which window treatments give you the most privacy?

Boston privacy shutters

Your home is your sanctuary, and if you’re like most homeowners, finding window treatments in Boston that add privacy and noise control to maintain your sanctuary is a priority. Any window treatment is better than a bare window. Yet there are some window treatments that add more privacy than others, especially on specialty windows.

Improving Privacy on Non-Square Windows

Most large, square windows in your house are easy to cover with nearly any window treatment including Boston shutters, shades, or blinds.

However, there are some situations when you need a special style of window treatment to get the privacy you want. These could be:

  • Windows in the bathroom where excess moisture might cause problems for fabric window treatments.

  • Sidelight windows that are tall and thin on which window treatments can be knocked around when you use the door.

  • Irregular windows like transoms, round windows, bay windows, etc., where conventional rectangular blinds and shades can’t cover your window without covering up the window’s unique shape.

  • Big windows that are difficult to reach like second-story foyer windows.

In these cases, you want window treatments that go above and beyond to add privacy to your house.

As a bonus, look for window treatments that offer good sound control to keep random noise outside and prevent neighbors from overhearing.

The Window Treatments That Give You The Most Privacy

The best window treatments for privacy that we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to be shut completely, for when total privacy and light control is what you want. To let light in and see outdoors, just tilt the louvers. For taller windows, you should position the louvers at an angle so light can enter but passersby can’t see in.

Interior shutters are also great for non-rectangular windows because they can be customized to fit any shape or size. And since Polywood shutters are moisture resistant, they’re perfect for bathrooms.

Another window treatment that helps with privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up very little space above the window, but are easily pulled down to prevent anyone being able to see in your home. While they can’t be custom-fit to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes in water resistant material for areas like your bathrooms.

Window Treatments that Don’t Make the Cut for Privacy

While any window treatment adds a minimum amount of privacy, there are a few that might not get the job done. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains were popular years ago and can add a an airy feeling to a room. However they don’t offer the level of privacy of other window treatments, especially when it’s dark out.

Another product we don’t recommend for privacy are cheap or bulky blinds, which can break and/or get stuck at a certain angle. If you can’t totally shut the blinds due to breakage, then they’re not doing you any favors for privacy.
