Dispelling Shutter Myths

April 03, 2017

We do a lot of talking to homeowners about shutters in Boston.

And even if it may come as a surprise, when we talk with people across Beantown, we hear the same few myths about shutters repeated. Let’s take a few moments to expose some common myths surrounding shutters so that you’re able to make the perfect choice for your space when looking into new window treatments.

Myth: Shutters Are Easy to Install Yourself

Lots of home design projects are simple enough to do on your own in a single afternoon. Putting in shutters might not be one of them, however.

Putting in new shutters can be hard from the get-go, as the measurements of the dimensions of your windows have to be incredibly precise to ensure a smooth and snug fit, as well as to ensure that your windows are able to open and close. Depending on what the shutters are made of, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, raising big shutter panels and installing them level might be a rough task. If a single step of the process is done incorrectly, you might end up with misshapen shutters or frequent drafts from ill-fitting weather-stripping.

Myth: Shutters Make A Home Look Dim

Less-informed home designers might shy away from shutters, believing they’ll make a space look dark or dimly lit. This myth most likely stems from inexperience with shutters.

Think of it this way: sunlight will always enter into your home at an angle. An interior shutter will allow you to alter that angle by adjusting their louvers, granting you better control over level of light. And don’t forget, shutters can still swing completely open to let in as much light as you could want.

Myth: Shutters Cost a Lot

It’s true that shutters aren’t as cheap as your run of the mill blinds from a hardware store. But this myth has to do with how you think about shutters. If you think about them as just a simple decoration that isn’t expected to last more than a year or two, then yes, shutters can be fairly expensive. But shutters are a lasting part of your house, and come with several benefits: shutters are energy efficient and can lower your monthly HVAC bills, they can increase your house’s appraisal value, and shutters are able to last decades, unlike blinds–which will have to be replaced repeatedly throughout the years.

Myth: Shutters Only Work In Older Homes

Perhaps the name “plantation shutters” has something to do with the myth that shutters are an “old-timey” treatment, but it definitely isn’t accurate. While shutters were typical for older home styles throughout the years, their crisp, clean lines and neutral shades makes it so they fit in just as well with more chic, up-to-date designs. Plantation shutters are the ultimate in versatile window treatments.
