What To Expect During Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Holly Perron

To help you pick the best window covering for your house, some companies, like Sunburst, start out with an in-home consultation. By bringing samples to you, we can demonstate how different window treatments would look with your decor. Now you can make an informed selection by seeing how each window treatment looks with your actual windows.

But what exactly happens during an in-home consultation? And how will meeting a representative in your home allow you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Sunburst is a leader in these in-home consultations, and here’s what you should expect at your appointment.

Detailing A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

People choosing between samples of window treatments.

Begin by scheduling an appointment by contacting your local representative. If you already have a shutter or window treatment in mind, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make it a point to show you different options available for your preferred treatment. We will also bring other options, so you can feel confident that your choice matches your ideal.

When we arrive, we’ll sit down and discuss what you are looking for in a window treatment. We’ll cover issues like your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency ideas, and we’ll discuss hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your rep will also want to know how your windows are used and what style you want to acheive. And it’s alright if you don’t know percisely what you need, as we’ll show you multiple options.

You may have to see many different window treatments until we discover the perfect window treatment for you. Most people want to explore a few different ideas, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or choosing the best stain to coordinate with your color scheme. We’ll also find all the options available for the covering, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll take percise measurements of your windows. We will typically measure the windows in every room in your home—even if you only need to fit treatments for some of your windows. We do this because many of our clients ask to get future shutters or blinds quickly. Finally, we will guide you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no surprises on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are confident that Sunburst will perform compentent in-home consultation, there are some things you should never witness from any window treatment company. It should go without saying, the quality of your consultation experience usually equals the quality of the window treatments.

Above all else, your rep should treat your home with respect. The rep should arrive as scheduled, with all samples requested, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your representative should always bring product and company pamphlets and pricing information.

When discussing pricing, you should be given a full written quote. Don’t accept a large pricing range, scribbled on a scrap piece of paper or the back of a business card. And never accept pricing information without window measurement. You need to know how much product and installation should cost. Don’t forget to ask for references and online reviews.
